Neck Pain Treatment
well·ness - the state of being in good health
Neck pain is one of the most common complaints that new patients come into our office. Neck pain can be caused by a variety of different things. The severity of the pain can range from minor discomfort to completely debilitating. One of the causes of neck pain is past injuries that occurred due to whiplash or head injury. These pains may not be felt immediately but can take years to surface as the body is subtly affected by the injury. If left untreated, arthritis and other pain and dysfunction can occur. This can lead to chronic pain and even loss of feeling in the arms and hands. That is why it is very important to get regular checkups and especially after accidents.
Additionally, disc herniation and degenerative joint disease can cause pain in the neck area. The former can be caused by trauma including heavy lifting and is the result of a disc in your vertebrae pushing up against a nerve. The latter is also called arthritis and involves the compression of nerves which can result in pain in the arms, hands, and fingers.
There is another cause of pain that is of unknown origin. This is usually caused by postural abnormalities. Things such as sitting too much at a desk or computer can lead to forwarding head posture and loss of cervical lordosis. Even a slight decrease in the neck curve can increase pain exponentially. It may also increase the sympathetic stress response which keeps your body in a stressful fight or flight status. It also decreases the spinal cord and spinal nerve conduction velocity which makes it harder for the nerves to transmit messages.
During your chiropractic visit, the chiropractor will determine the cause of your neck pain and give you treatment recommendations to help correct the problem. This usually includes repeated chiropractic visits and adjustments, tips on how to sit and work better, tips on how to sleep better, postural exercises, and some stretches to promote spinal molding. All in all, chiropractic is safe and effective at treating most causes of neck pain and it is recommended to get checked on a regular basis.
