Herniated Disc Treatment
well·ness - the state of being in good health
Herniated and bulging discs are conditions where a disc protrudes outside of the normal diameter in the spinal column. People with this condition may not even know there is anything wrong until the bulging annulus of the disc presses on a nerve in the spinal column producing excruciating pain. A herniated disc can cause severe pain, muscle weakness, and a decreased range of motion. Chiropractic care is one of the most popular alternative treatments used to treat a herniated or bulging discs.
Symptoms usually originate at the location of the bulging disc and could travel along the affected nerves. The primary symptom is going to be a pain in the back, neck, arm, or leg. This is also usually accompanied by tenderness and stiffness of the surrounding tissues.
Degeneration due to aging is one of the causes of a bulging or herniated disc. As we age, the shock-absorbing spinal discs lose their water content and elasticity, making them stiffer and more prone to damage. Trauma increases the pressure of the disc’s central nucleus and puts a lot of stress on the outer annulus layer. When the outer surface is pushed outward the condition is considered a bulging disc. When the outer layer is torn or ruptured it is considered a herniated disc and more severe.
Improper lifting techniques are one of the most common causes of disc herniations. Movements like repetitive lifting and bending can be a contributing factor for injury. Contact sports and any compressive force from a fall or motor vehicle accident can also lead to these injuries.
Chiropractic adjustments balance and align the affected area. This helps move the herniated disc away from the nerve, reducing the pressure on the nerve root and eventually relieving associated pain and inflammation. Each case has a different timeline as it relates to symptom relief. Chiropractic adjustments are a good non-invasive option for the treatment of herniated discs.
To determine the severity of the herniation, an MRI may be ordered. This is not always routinely performed but is the best way to get a full picture of the injury. Pain relief drug medications can be extremely addictive and don’t treat the cause of the pain. Surgical intervention is needed in some cases but is never guaranteed and very invasive. Chiropractic care offers relief from pain without the need for any addictive drugs or medications and heals the body from within and not just masking the pain. Chiropractic adjustments relieve pressure on the nervous system and help the body reduce inflammation, improve movement, and alleviate pain.
