One of the most common misalignments in the neck is what is called forward head posture. Forward head posture is when your head has an abnormal anterior weight-bearing. This almost always corresponds with an abnormally decreased cervical lordosis.
Studies have shown that decreased cervical lordosis slows down the spinal cord and spinal nerve conduction velocity. This slows down reaction time and decreases strength and sensation in the neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. It also increases the sympathetic stress response. This is basically an increase in your fight or flight response. It increases the production of adrenaline and cortisol which shunt blood to your muscles and away from your visceral organs. People in this state have trouble with digestion and sleep. Lastly, it has been shown to also increase pain in the head, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands.
Patients will continue to improve when they follow treatment recommendations as far as adjustments, stretching, exercises, proper posture, and spinal molding.
